Motorhome touring vacations are getting more and more favored in England and Europe and many people envisage hiring a Yankee type vehicle such as a Winnebago rather than the home grown British or EU models produced by companies like Swift or Elddis.

before deciding to hire a winnebago to be used in England {however ,} it is advantageous considering the arguments for and against.  It must be mentioned that Winnebago is really a manufacturer’s name even though it is now used as a universal term for Yank Motorhome and there are lots of other makers, such as Airstream.  While considering the hire of such a vehicle it is smart to consider switching to a British equivalent if the circumstances warrant it.  Let us consider the arguments of the american motorhome against the English equivalent.

Winnebago motorhomes are left hand drive while English automobiles are right hand drive, this is a definite downside if you are planning to stay in the United Kingdom, however if you are going to mainland Europe the winnebago is more acceptable.  Winnebago autos are also long autos, designed for the u.s.  Roads which are wider and much straighter than English roads, you wouldn’t need to make a 3 point turn on a British road in a winnebago though many have rearward facing cameras to help you in this job.  Winnebago engines are made for u.s.  Gas costs, whether diesel or petrol the fuel consumption will be high and must be factored into your decision. The side door on an American automobile will open onto the road instead of the pavement or verge when employed in Britain, this is going to be a major safety issue, especially if you are taking children with you.  Although reliable Winnebagos can break down just like any other car and spares availabilty can be limited in the U.K.  With many parts having to be shipped in from America expertise in repairing these vehicles can also be scanty.

On the other hand winnebago motorhomes are more roomy with many having slide out sides ( for use whilst parked ) which create enormous living areas, they’re normally fully kitted out with air-con, central heating, showers, hook up for waste, TV, electricity, separate bedrooms, built in generators, aouto-levelling air jacks, lcd televisions, automated transmission, air suspension, separate dining areas and roof deck seating.  Generally they are much more opulent than their British opposite numbers, they also tend to have stronger engines. It should however be noted that if the morohome weighs more than 7.5 tonnes you will not be ready to drive it ona a normal car drivers licence, you will need a class’C’ lorry licence.

you therefore have to select whether the static advantages of a winnebago are far more important than the flaws of fuel consumption, maneuverability, safety etc in coming to the choice of whether to hire a winnebago or whether to go for a British motorhome.  Whichever you select you are bound to enjoy the liberty of the road, that out of doors camping feelgood factor and the ever changing views as you tour the country.
